Common questions
Is HoopSatellite free?
Yes. There are no ads and nothing to buy.
Do I need an account?
Not to browse the map. Reviewing satellite finds, adding courts, check-ins, pickup runs and the You screen use an anonymous account the app makes for you after asking your birth month and year. There's no email or password.
Why does the app ask when I was born?
HoopSatellite accounts are for people 13 and older. The app asks once, works out the answer on your phone and never sends your birth date. If you're under 13, the map still works, and reviews and courts you add stay on your phone.
Does HoopSatellite track my location?
No. Your location is used on your phone only: to center the map on you, and to check you're within 250 m of a court when you tap "Here now". It's never sent, saved, or used in the background. See the Privacy Policy.
How do check-ins work?
- Here now checks you in for 2 hours, after the phone confirms you're at the court.
- Hooping at… says when you plan to be there, today or tomorrow.
- Other players see counts. Friends who follow each other see each other's handles.
- A "Here now" each day keeps your streak going.
A court is missing or wrong
- Missing: long-press the map where it is (or tap + and then the map), and fill in the details. It's checked before it shows for everyone.
- A purple ring is a satellite find nobody has confirmed yet. Tap it and answer "It's a court", "Not a court" or "Someone's home court".
- Anything else (closed, moved, private): email us with the court's name and city.
What does "may be residents-only" mean?
The court is at an apartment complex, a homeowners' association or a similar private community, or at a campground, RV park or resort, and may be only for the people who live or stay there. Check the posted rules before you play. Courts can be on private property even without a note.
What does "On a military base" mean?
The court or school gym is on a military base. The people who live and work there can play, but to get on the base you need base access: a military ID, or a visitor pass, which usually needs a sponsor on the base and a background check. Check with the base before you go.
How do friends work?
Everyone has a friend code on the You screen. Share yours, and type a friend's code to follow them. There's no search and no contact import, so only people you give your code to can follow you. Get a new code any time if you want to stop new follows.
How do I block or report someone?
Tap their handle to open their player card, then Block or Report. To report a run, tap its flag. A block hides each of you from the other. Reports go to our moderators, who act on them within 24 hours. See the Terms of Use.
Why can't I use check-ins or runs?
- They need a connection. Actions you take offline are sent when you're back online.
- They're off on a phone where the age screen's answer was under 13.
- If the app says they're unavailable, try again later. The map keeps working.
I got a new phone or deleted the app
Accounts are anonymous and live on the phone, so they can't be moved or restored. You'll start fresh on the new phone. To delete the old account, use the account deletion page.
How do I delete my account?
In the app: tap the person button at the top right, then Delete my account. It's deleted right away. If you can't use the app, request deletion on the web.
Where does the court data come from?
OpenStreetMap, detections on USDA aerial imagery, official park and court lists, park websites, and players. Tap Credits on the map for every source and its license.
Does it work offline?
Yes, for the courts you looked at recently. Reviews, courts you add, check-ins and run actions are saved and sent when you're back online.
